Elaine’s comments: Leaside offers visitors to St. John’s a choice of rooms, suites or apartments. All are 4.5 star. Some are traditional in their décor and others are hip or boutique in style. You choose! The Manor House is located minutes by car from St. John’s Convention Centre, George Street and the harbour. We like the idea of naming our suites. It helps us give them personalities and it helps you identify with our facilities. The Placentia Room is named for that “far greater bay” – Placentia Bay. My family comes from one of the islands in the Bay that were resettled in the 50s and 60s under the controversial and steeped-in-folklore resettlement program of the former Joseph R. Smallwood – premier of Newfoundland and Labrador. My family – among many – return to that little island in great numbers every summer. Might say it is a family tradition! It is an unusual name. It translates from the French Plaisance meaning ‘pleasant place’. Placentia used to be the Old French capital of the area several hundred years ago. I remember once having a guest from the U.S. call to book one of my rooms. At one point, she sweetly asked, in her best southern accent, “Honey, please tell me you don’t have a room up there called the ‘placenta’ – I assured her that her mistake was an honest one. It is probably not a quantum leap to take the Placentia of “pleasant place” meaning to the “placenta” – which is surely also a pleasant place! Anyway I digress. The Placentia
is our smallest room – but it is nonetheless airy, bright,
and charming.
