  the Locals

Talk to us - I believe that Newfoundlanders and Labradorians offer a wonderful blend of sweet and often shy hospitality. My advice to my guests, for example, when visiting coastal communities, is to head down the wharf, the pub, the picnic spot and "visit" with the locals.   If they seem reticent – as would my father be, for example - then you break the ice!  You will find a strong-willed people with an opinion on just about everything.  They are imbued with a marvelous sense of humor with vividly colourful memories that they love to spin into a yarn or two. The Dictionary of Newfoundland and Labrador can help you decipher some of the musical local dialect.

If you are fortunate, your evening will end up at a scoff – where you can enjoy” a traditional dinner – one that might feature such delicacies as moose stew, Fish 'n Brewis or figgy duff; you could even get yourself screeched-in.  If you are really lucky, you will have occasion to sample a local rendition of our wonderful traditional music.
