The
Dive
Located just
a 15-minute drive from St. John’s, the oldest capital city in North
America, is perhaps the best diving in the world. Four iron ore wrecks,
140 meters in length, sit upright and fully intact in the clear waters
of Conception Bay. These wrecks were sunk by German U-Boats in WWII to
destroy the valuable cargo on board. One of those U-Boats left a dud torpedo
on the floor adjacent to one of the wrecks. Of the four very accessible
wrecks, you could choose the S.S. Rose Castle – she, like your bride,
is truly spectacular. Nearly 70 years on, she sits upright looking for
all the world like she is poised to sail again. Lines running to her mast
are still taut; the Marconi Room’s radio is still awaiting messages;
and deep in her hull you respectively acknowledge the personal effects
of the ill-fated crew. Without a doubt she is well preserved from the
elements. The 4.7 inch gun located on her stern decorated in flowering
sea anemones, forevermore ready for action. Cavernous cargo holds beckon
you in under the close supervision of
Ocean Quest’s Rick Stanley. An abundance of marine life awaits
you around the islands reefs, caverns and walls.
