Bell Island – located a short car and ferry ride from downtown St. John’s - is one of those communities in the province that epitomizes the survivability of the Newfoundlander. Once, one of the more prosperous of iron ore mining communities in eastern Canada, and at the time of its closure, Canada's longest continually operating mining project, Bell Island is now a scenic tourist destination, and a poignant reminder of what happens when technology, and other factors, leave a community and its labour pool behind.

The Bell Island is a two-story suite that has been built in what were the original stables of the house. When I purchased Leaside it was a 20’ x 20’ x 20’ (-ish) empty cube with a winter’s supply of wood in it. Old pictures show large wooden doors – it may have been a garage for the Parkers whom I understand to have had the first motor car in the city! My partner was quick to envision the two floors. It was exciting seeing it unfold. It features a full kitchen with adjoining living room; a loft, galleried bedroom; and a double Jacuzzi.

The Bell Island is much-loved suite – my corporate visitors to St. John’s enjoy the luxurious home away from home feel of it. Families like the fact that the contemporary sofa in the downstairs living room is also a sofabed!. The deck off the living room makes a wonderful place to sit and enjoy a morning coffee, or a glass of bubbly before retiring.
